Yeast could be the key to ending lake invaders
Many were first found in Michigan where ships discharged ballast. By 2016, the International Maritime Organization could require all ships to install treatment systems to disinfect their ballast water, but the treaty still must be ratified by dozens of countries. Environmental groups say 2016 is too late. Now, ships either swish saltwater through their tanks to kill freshwater organisms or dump their ballast water in the ocean before entering the Great Lakes. Either method can leave tiny creatures in the sediment in the tanks. Scientists say treatment is the only real solution to stop future invaders. Bills before Congress would require tougher standards and a speedier timetable for ships entering U.S. ports. But so far, the legislation hasn't passed, partly because of lobbying from the shipping industry, which says the measures are too costly.

But prime season is less than three months, so the real cost is $24,000 a month, or about $800 a day. And that's before you consider taxes, insurance, maintenance and utilities. This is not unique to Maine. Check the prices of waterfront houses on Cape Cod or Long Island, in Annapolis, Md., or anywhere along the Florida Coast, and waterfront is priced in multiples of $1 million. The same is true, in spades, on the West Coast. Anything on the water, anywhere, is the stuff of trophies — and priced accordingly... One answer: Buy a boat. Actives Speak Louder Than Words
Is beauty ageless? Is there a timeline for attractiveness? As populations in the U.S., Western Europe and Japan continue to grow older, consumers, marketers and even pop icons are rethinking the definition of old. Just last month, newly-minted octogenerian Hugh Hefner referred to 80 as the new 40. Hef may be pushing the envelope a bit, but there’s no doubt that the beauty industry is taking a new interest in reducing the appearance of aging. Just last month, L’Oréal signed Diane Keaton to represent its Age Perfect Pro-Calcium Skin care line which debuts in July. It’s the first L’Oréal Paris brand to target women ages 60 and older in the U.S. L’Oréal already targets women in their 50s with its Age Perfect line and Revitalift is for women in their 40s.
