Report on nutrient pollution forecasts worsening health for nation's estuaries Cape Cod to Chesapeake are the most impaired in America While moderate to high level nutrient-related impacts were reported in systems from all coasts, the Mid-Atlantic region, stretching south from Cape Cod to the Chesapeake Bay, is the most impairedThe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration today released a comprehensive assessment of estuarine eutrophication, or nutrient pollution, that clearly indicates linkages between upstream activities and coastal ecosystem health. The report shows that the majority of U.S. estuaries assessed are highly influenced by human-related activities and points out that eutrophication is a widespread problem globally. "Observations have confirmed that our nation’s coastal waters are stressed," said retired Navy Vice Adm.
Fires hit rain-starved Carolinas, Va.
The high winds and wildfires caused both Democratic presidential hopefuls — Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama — to cancel appearances scheduled in Roanoke, Va. Most spots on the Tigers' 25-man roster seem solidified as spring training nears. Still, the precise makeup of the bench and bullpen is uncertain. Free Press sports writer Jon Paul Morosi examines the dynamics at work as club officials shape the roster: • Even after an impressive performance last year, Ryan Raburn is not assured of an Opening Day roster spot. The team is expected to carry four bench players, and Vance Wilson, Ramon Santiago, Brandon Inge and Marcus Thames are strong candidates for those spots. A job would open if Wilson does not recover from elbow surgery, or if the club trades Inge or Thames. Raburn has a minor league option remaining, so he could be sent to Triple-A Toledo without clearing waivers. .
Tigers, Granderson agree to 5-year, $30.25M deal
The Detroit Tigers could have kept Curtis Granderson around for a while, retaining his talents with one-year deals until he became eligible for free agency after the 2011 season. The Tigers, though, don't just wait around to make moves these days. Granderson and baseball's busiest team agreed Monday to a $30.25 million, five-year contract that includes a club option for 2013 that could make the deal worth up to $43.25 million. .
