| Clash of the Artists: Cast Your Vote at artforprogress.org
For the past two months, emerging artists have been sending Art For Progress (AFP) their best, and now it's time for the virtual art community to do its part. AFP's annual arts competition, Clash of the Artists, is the first of its kind, where artists in six categories compete in an interactive on-line environment. People from New York to Japan can visit artforprogress.org and vote for their favorites while viewing short films, listening to music, and seeing new work from emerging artists and fashion designers. The top three artists in each category will compete on Saturday, March 15th at a live finals event in New York City. In 2007, over 5,000 people voted on-line, and over 300 people attended the memorable live event. The five-week voting period begins January 15th and runs through February 20th.
Softball's best of the west
While we strive for those results, that's not the reason why this project was taken on. Instead, it was to solve an issue that has been a burr in the britches of most who follow, coach and play high school sports on the Western Slope way beyond the 13 years I've been on the scene. I, along with those folks, have wondered - loudly at times - why it seems athletes who live on this side of the Continental Divide get overlooked when it comes to earning all-state recognition? For those of you who've read to this point I'm sure you agree. I, like you, anxiously wait to see who from the Western Slope earns a spot on each of the All-Colorado prep sports teams produced by Rocky Preps and the Denver Post. Likewise, after reading the results, I've come away scratching my head.
Minuteman's high-tech border barrier called 'a cow fence'
Almost two years later, the reality is a five-strand barbed-wire barrier that ranchers dismiss as a mere cattle fence. The fence to help stop illegal immigration was the dream of Chris Simcox, the founder and president of the Minuteman Defense Corps. The group has chapters throughout the country, with Minuteman members from as far away as New Hampshire making the trip down to Arizona to participate in citizens' border patrols. They are doing a job Simcox says the federal government is not doing well enough. Simcox, who participated in border patrols as recently as October, has said, "If elected officials will not lead, then it's up to the citizens." Volunteers say they heeded Simcox's call because they believe illegal immigration is a grave threat to the security of the United States.
Britney Spears
Britney Spears: Street Walker seems to be focused on reviving her career and spent the weekend at the Millenium Dance Studio rehearsing for her next video. Her father Jamie came along to offer moral support, according to OK! Magazine: "Her focus and clarity are noticeable," says one fortunate witness who had the chance to look on as Brit worked on her routine for her upcoming video. "Almost like the old Britney we've known and loved." Brit's dad arrived at Millennium to watch his daughter rehearse before they headed back home together. "Before Jamie got there, she seemed to be getting anxious," one witness tells OK!. "And then he arrived and her mood changed." OK! also reports Jamie Spears is doing some major house cleaning. He fired Britney's business manager Howard Grossman who allegedly has ties to Sam Lutfi: According to court documents released Friday, Commissioner Goetz ordered Grossman to turn over "all documents, records ands assets relating to Britney Spears" to Jamie Spears and co-conservator Andrew Wallet.
Apple - it's about iMacs not iPhones
I also find the mature OS X (10.4 Tiger version) to be excellent, as I'm sure Leopard (10.5) will prove to be when it's updated in the next few weeks. However, I'll be considering a PC desktop as my next computer purchase. Apple make great computers & have the best, most intuitive OS (also virus-free) available today, but their consumer desktop models are relatively niche. If you want an upgradeable desktop Mac, Apple offers nothing but the Mac Pro at over £2,000 (with decent monitor). I think that the limited choice of Mac hardware is a significant obstacle to many more people switching over from PC. .
Casio Exilim EX-V7 digital camera
It turned out to be a challenge to get very worked up one way or the other about Casio's Exilim EX-V7 , a camera that balances out to be an almost perfectly average point-and-shoot. On the plus side, the 7x zoom lens covers a lot of territory, and the camera's battery life of almost 1,195 shots per charge is exceptional for its class. (The Nikon Coolpix S50c [ ] holds the lowest score, with 347 shots per charge; Samsung's NV11 [ ] performed best, achieving 1,233.) Throw in a few points, too, for a full range of manual exposure controls, a rarity in this category. On the mildly annoying side, there's the zoom slider control, which is awkwardly placed adjacent and vertical to the LCD screen. Also, image stabilization proved too ineffective in most situations. And the plastic docking cradle, required to recharge the battery, will take up more room in a suitcase than most folks would care to sacrifice.
